It depends on the loan type – federal or private. Your options are based on that. Do you know what you have?

You can reconsolidate to get out of default, but the default stays on your credit. Sounds like you’ve made great progress. I personally would consolidate then keep it up and work to eliminate the loan.

My auto payments were immediately dropped. I called National Credit Services who I was rehabilitating with. They told me to contact the DOE. I called the DOE and they said to wait on further instruction. I went to the woefully user UNfriendly website and couldn’t even log in with info I KNOW was correct. In the mean time, sometime in late 2019 I was sent a letter that my taxes would be garnished for nonpayment. I must have overlooked the letter in the mail, and indeed my tax refund was garnished. I ws never otherwise contacted by the DOE. That feels a little like unfair practice and sneaky when I thought I was doing everything right. I am now paying on the once-again defaulted loan (still with NCS) and am not afforded another opportunity to rehabilitate. Thanks to COVID measures, I have paid down all the interest and am down to principle. Is this my only option for taking care of the loan at this point?
